Just made some Moccasins

August 14, 2012

Last week, after dropping daughter number one off for a week at her new school in North Adams, MA, we had some time to kill before visiting daughter number two the next day at her camp in Rowe. Lisa and I did some gallery shopping and found ourselves in a used book shop. As I often do, I asked whether the owner had any old wood working or crafts books. He had a few, but the one I ended up with was W. Ben Hunt’s The Complete How-to Book of Indian Craft. The illustrations are great and there are lots of interesting ideas. The first one that caught my eye was the Iroquois rattle made out of a turtle. What baby wouldn’t want that (though I suppose it might not actually be for babies, now that I think of it). Anyway, the first project I took on was to make a pair of moccasins out of some elk skin I bought some time ago. This will not be a how to, but I will show the main steps and there will be some commentary along with the slide show.
